Objectives:
Students will be able to form a reasonable cladogram and rationalize why they made it how they did.
Materials:
Power point notes
Toys (Plastic animals for creating the cladograms)
Safety Issues: N/A
Opening:
I will open the lesson by asking students to share some of the things they have learned so far. I will then tell students that today they will be given the opportunity to show me what they have learned by creating a cladogram that requires knowledge of previously learned topics. I will show students the toys they will be using to create the cladogram to get them excited about the lab and thinking about how they will go about this task.
Groups of students are given different groups of “species” and must work together to come up with a reasonable cladogram
Cladogram presentations (20 min)
Each group informally presents to the class what kind of organism they had and explains how they made their cladogram. They must to able to rationalize why they made it how they did.
Closing:
Five minutes before the end of class, or when the last presentation is over, we will have a full class discussion where I will ask the students what they thought of making the cladograms. Was it easy, hard, fun, interesting? Did you always agree with your group members or did different students have different opinions on how to create it? I will then explain that there is not always one correct wake to create a cladogram because often there is missing evidence. Finally I will assign homework and make sure all students are on the same page.
Assessment:
Students will be informally assessed based on their rationale of their cladograms.
Homework:
Write a one page double spaced response to end of section skill review question
